Citizen Smile are an indie pop rock band formed by childhood friends James Brown and Kory Kopchick. After a plethora of failed projects, Citizen Smile officially took shape in 2005 with the addition of Daniel Pazuchowski and later Ricky Ruggero. The band's name is a nod to the greatest American film of all time, Citizen Kane. In a sense, Citizen Smile can be defined as each band member's very own rosebud. Citizen Smile's discography consists of three EPs (Seasons EP, Oh, Okay, and Keepsakes) and one LP (Citizen Smile), with the first being released in 2005 (Seasons EP) and the latest in 2010 (Keepsakes). Citizen Smile draws influence from bands such as Wilco and Nada Surf. Lead singer and primary songwriter James Brown follows Jeff Tweedy of Wilco’s approach in his writing style through the use of poetry-driven lyrical content. Brown also mimics Matthew Caws of Nada Surf through the use of hook-heavy vocal melodies. But perhaps the most uniquely fascinating characteristic of Citizen Smile is their live performance. Their high energy and constantly maturing sound promise to deliver both in the studio and on the stage.
