THE SUBMARINES at the Pike Room

FRIDAY MAY 23, 2008
doors at 8pm
tickets: $8 (buy tickets)

First meeting in Boston, THE SUBMARINES' John Dragonetti (Jack Drag) & Blake Hazard were both solo artists, but soon became musically and romantically involved. The couple moved west to Los Angeles to continue their career there, but in the fall of 2004 their relationship ended. That event, however, stimulated both of them creatively, and as Hazard still recorded her material at Dragonetti's studio, they ended up playing the songs that they wrote about their breakup for each other, eventually recording thier debut album DECLARE A NEW STATE. Apparently, this also worked to reconcile their love, and the two got back together and ultimately married. Now through the emotions of break-up and sorrow, THE SUBMARINES are ready to "freak out and have alot more fun." And thier new album out this may HONEYSUCKLE WEEKS proves just that. It is a glorious collage of The Submarines’ wide-ranging influences, from old-school dub to intricately layered electronica to 60’s pop. The duo was also joined on a number of tracks by the phenomenal Section Quartet. While some songs started with a traditional guitar-in-hand approach, many began with instrumental tracks composed by Dragonetti, which Hazard then completed with words and melody, drawing on each of the their musical strengths. With HEADLIGHTS and CHAMPIONS OF BREAKFAST. Doors at 8pm. $8 all ages.
