We apologize for any confusion this may cause.

In 1988, the band formed as Katzenjammer, which is a German slang word for ‘hangover’. They changed it to Sons of Kyuss, before settling on simply Kyuss after their first EP in 1990.

The first lineup comprised members John Garcia (vocals), Josh Homme (guitarist), Nick Oliveri (bass) and Brant Bjork (drums). They started amassing local fans in their hometown of Palm Desert, California, with Kyuss concerts popular around this area.

They released their debut album, Wretch, on Dali Records in September 1991. The album sales didn’t reflect the popularity of the band as a live act, with Kyuss tickets doing much better. Josh Homme’s psychedelic guitar skills were of particular interest.

Their next album, Blues for the Red Sun, was produced by Chris Goss, who captured the Kyuss sound much more successfully than the previous album. It was a critical success when it was released in 1992 and is now considered one of the pioneering stoner rock albums. By the end of 1993, they had been asked to support Metallica on tour, which created a surge in interest in Kyuss tickets.

Their first major label album also received critical acclaim, demonstrating an evolved, mature sound. However, a few cracks began to show in the next few years, and after a couple more albums and lots of Kyuss tours, the band decided to split after their final album, …And the Circus Leaves Town in 1995.

Josh Homme and Alfredo Hernández formed Queens of the Stone Age in 1998, and recruited Nick Oliveri as the bassist. Since the split of Kyuss, there was much speculation by fans about a possible reunion. In June 2010, original members Nick and Brant announced that they would reform as KYUSS LIVES! minus Josh Homme.
