Like finding a gem of an engine in a junkyard heart, the Champagne Saints are a collection of rock orphans, formed from the ashes of failed bands, ensembles, quartets, bar bands, choirs, garage bands and pathetic singer-songwriters who have flamed out brilliantly. This band possesses a certain Voltron-esque quality to them—greater than the sum of its parts, joining together not with a sword of lightning, but a blaze of synth echoes and feedback that roar like those metallic lion things born of Japanese animation. Yet they forged a chemistry that is not broken by miles. They are the sons of 94 and 80, which do not represent years, but the interstate highways that bind them. They are the mad scientist from Lincoln, the man who lost his religion (in a totally Stipean way) from the D, and the anchor who is a nation unto himself from the south side of Chicago. As they've shedded the skin of 90's nostalgia that came with their debut, Throwing Hail Marys, they have forged a record that is completely their own with their hailed follow-up, Sparkle, Darker. This is a collection of songs that explore the corners of the soul that has been lost, but without being all Robert Smith about it. They have left behind the music about fallen angels, and have embraced the devil inside (the INXS kind). The album wades through the different shades of darkness, without losing its beacon--a nice, big-breasted hook.

So come out, board the spaceship and experience the journey. With all deference to Paul Simon, these are no longer the days of miracles and wonder. These are now the days of bad miracles and wonder drugs. These are the Champagne Saints.
