Benny Boeldt, aka
ADVENTURE, creates ultra-melodic synth compositions that pull from his earliest exposure to the 8-bit soundtracks of the Sega Genesis video game catalog. But it’s not just retro video game music. Mix in the kitschy Moogy sound of Hot Butter’s "Popcorn", the saturated disco-theatrics of late seventies electro-pop acts like Sparks and Yellow Magic Orchestra, and a penchant for Eastern European diminished scales and you’ve come pretty close to Adventure’s accelerated baroque sound. With
FUTURE ISLANDS, more excellent minimal Baltimore synthpop. Sez Jessica Suarez: "Future Islands is not an island, of course, but it's difficult not to single out Sam Herring's voice, not only for its earnestness, but for his careful enunciation. Surrounded by the band's junkyard percussion and messy keyboards, his vocals are like a man flicking dirt off his suit while standing in a landfill, a jarring but pleasant mix of clean and dirty."
