Pat Noecker's old band, Liars, makes experimental rock too, but it could be bubblegum pop next to the ambitious sonic journeys of THESE ARE POWERS. TAP's assaults, which display melodies mostly just in passing, maintain a tactile presence and rhythmic drive that keeps them surprisingly immediate. These Are Powers mesh organic sounds while seamlessly flirting with improvisation. Their songs are hymns over club beats, ragas piggybacking on noise collages, dirges married to dance. Founded by Pat Noecker (ex-Liars) and Anna Barie and joined by Bill Salas (Brenmar), These Are Powers upends traditional stylistic expectations of acts operating in the noise-punk continuum. Straight from These Are Powers: "These Are Powers make music like cashmere lightning. We are free. We speak our own language of sound. We like hymns over club beats and ragas piggybacking on noise collages. We are a celebration. We are present in dreams and energy. We love the dynamics of being and the infinity of possibility. We improvise and collaborate, and are strengthened by union. Pat Noecker sings and plays subsonic bass frequencies often mistaken for synthesizers and robotic whales. Bill Salas attacks his electro acoustic drum kit while standing, and accents his beats with live loops and deft effects. Anna Barie plays shimmering, spectral guitar and sings and performs with abandon. We are future primitives who tour lots and live in Brooklyn and Chicago!" With the amazing Detroit progressive drones of RED CHINA and FASHION FLESH.
