"We’ve been attempting to ignore this for as long as we could, but it turns out that "booty hopping" is much more than your average fad. It’s got lift, bounce and a bit of sexuality to complement this potent brand of random fun you may have seen occurring on the streets and in the bars. The brainchild of resident Real Detroit Weekly photographer Joe Gall and Chad Nicefield of local pop maestros Manna & Quail, booty hopping is the act of having several persons bend over, while another party hurls, jumps or ninja kicks over the respective booties below.

“It was just the flavor of the night,” recalls Gall. After floating around downtown Detroit on assignment, Gall and Nicefield found themselves in the heart of Greektown as last call came to fruition. “Everyone was kind of spilling out into the streets and getting into their cars. There were only a few people to shoot for the paper, and that’s when we found these girls with the most massive booties of all time. So, we had them bend over and [Nicefield] ended up doing a ninja kick over their booties. They were totally down for it, and that was the very first booty hop.” While Gall and Nicefield claim they didn’t go home that same night and anxiously discuss their newest discovery, the groundwork had undeniably been laid for something much larger to rise out of their adventurous outings. Within two weeks, Gall and Nicefield were being recognized as “those guys who jump booties,” giving a face to the hottest craze since trying to guess whether or not Woodward Ave. hookers are chicks or trannys. Even touring musical acts like MSTRKRFT and Man Man have joined in on the fun. “It’s really cool to see everyone’s different version of a booty hop,” says Nicefield. “And it’s not discriminatory toward chicks either. [Gall’s] booty and my booty get hopped just as much as girl’s booties do.” Real Detroit Weekly
